Oh Iowa. I never thought I would say something like this, but I love you. I love your small towns. I love the gorgeous fall weather. The green grass. The kind people. I love it all.
We came to visit Brian’s cousin, Jenny, and her family. Her husband, Nathan, is the pastor of a church in La Porte City and their son, Tedy, is the cutest 2.5 year old. Ever. He and Jack were buddies the entire time we were there. Every time we walked from the tailer (parked behind their house in the church parking lot), we saw an excited sweet little face watching us from the window (look at the bottom right window).
While we were in La Porte City we were
taken care of spoiled. Jenny fed us a warm home cooked breakfast in the morning and a delicious dinner every night. And they were all gluten free. She went out of her way to research gluten free recipes to serve us while we were there – how sweet is that?
We were able to do a few service projects while we were there. One was fairly small, we participated in their church leaf clean up day. Get this y’all, they have this lush green grass covered in vibrant orange, gold, and red leaves. They don’t even had a water sprinkler system (Texas friends, pick up your jaw).
The second project I was able to do is a photo mini-session fundraiser. Jenny and Nathan are in the process of adopting their second child. We are all called to help the motherless and the widows, we just don’t feel personally lead to adopt. We do want to help though. This is our way of helping. While we were in town I held 5 mini-sessions, with all of the proceeds going to their family adoption funds. I look forward to meeting the newest baby Richardson some day. I can’t wait!
(Jenny was a fabulous assistant, she modeled in the funky metal tubes before my sessions- here is her best Zoolander pose. I love it!)
While we were in Iowa we had the chance to celebrate Halloween. Their church held a trunk or treat celebration. Kenniston loved helping out with that! She and I came up with a fun way to participate. She came up with a “pin the mouth on a pumpkin” game. I worked with her create it. Kenniston spent part of her evening hosting the game (when she wasn’t doing it, yours truly was hosting) and the other part of the night trick or treating with the rest of the family and cousin Tedy.
Harry Pottter, from, you know, Harry Potter:
When we weren’t ogling the beautiful fall colors around us, doing service projects, or trick or treating, we were hanging out with Tedy and his family. It was a lovely, relaxing 3 days. Don’t tell my Texas family, but Iowa may be on my list now…. oh Iowa, why aren’t you closer to Texas? *sigh*
